Mahatma Gandhi, a follower of non-violence and peace was born on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar, India. His real name is Mohandas Karam Chand Gandhi. He is known as Mahatma because Mahatma means Great Soul. He is a political ethicist who led a nonviolent movement for the independence of India. He gave up his whole life for the rights of the people of India. He was raised in Hindu Family. His father was Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi who worked as Chief Minister of Porbandar during that time. At his young age, he smoked and ate meat only once. At age of 18, he got his arranged marriage to a woman named Kasturba. He had four sons namely Manilal, Haridas, Ramlal, Devdas. During the time of death of his father, he was busy enjoying sex with his wife. When he later realized about it, he went into a deep state of remorse and shock. All these petty experiences of his life were the reason for him to take a strict vow of non-violence and compassion to others.

Contributions of Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi fought against truth and injustice in his whole life. His contributions to Indian Politics is unforgettable. He struggled much for the peace and freedom of Indians from Britishers. He became Satyagrahi during his career in South Africa. Later when he returned to India, he fought against injustice and launched the Satyagraha Movement. He was sent to jail many times during his activities. He launched the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1930 and the Quit India Movement in the year 1942. During his time, he was the leading person of non-violence movements in India and South Africa. Due to him, the British rule was successfully overthrown from India.
He started Satyagraha in South Africa in 1906-07 against compulsory passes for Indians. His non-cooperation movement convinced people for freedom against Britishers which played a crucial role in bringing Independence to India. He launched the Civil Disobedience Movement in March 1930 demanding eleven proposals from the government. During this movement.
Civil servants resigned from their jobs, students left their schools and colleges and foreign products, government taxes were boycotted. The Quit India Movement launched by him drove out British Rule from India. He gave a “Do or Die” speech during the movement. As a result of his movement, Britishers cleared that they would hand over the powers to the Indian Government. And thousands of Prisoners were also released. It is due to his valuable contributions, he is known as Bapu of India(Father of Nation).
Mahatma Gandhi is a prominent National Figure of India. Many people are inspired by his famous quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. He used to believe in simple living and high thinking. He used to wear simple clothes and was a vegetarian. His important legacies are his ideas and philosophies which are based on Ahimsa (non-violence) and Universal love. He is known and respected all over the world for his philosophies. He believed everyone should be treated equally irrespective of their religious and social backgrounds. He was a strong believer in God.

He was featured as the Man of the Year in 1930 and as one of Top Political Icons in 2011 by Time’s Magazine. Although he didn’t receive Noble Peace Prize but was nominated for it 5 times between 1937 to 1948. In his name, the Indian Government gives Gandhi Peace Prize annually to the social workers and influential leaders. He was also portrayed in the 1982 Film Gandhi by Ben Kingsley which won the Academy Award for Best picture.
